One of the best parts about running a company serving jiu-jitsu players is the incredible stories we hear from our customers.
We love Octavius' story because of his strong motivation to achieve higher goals and the positive mindset that helped him exceed his own expectations.
Pelham, AL. Brown Belt.
Why did you first get into jiu-jitsu?
I originally wanted to practice MMA but found a Krav Maga school , that started teaching basic grappling . That lead to a free jiu jitsu camp and that's when I fell in love instantly with jiu jitsu.
What has been the biggest obstacle in your journey and how have you overcome it?
My competition record as a first year purple belt was not as successful as hoped but I married and relocated to central Alabama. My wife encouraged me to train full time and began drilling more often and changing my dietary habits. This resulted in more podium placements and especially gold medals.
Tell us about your best (or worst) submission story.
My wife flew me to IBJJF Miami Open as an early birthday gift and I brought home my first double gold in weight class as well as open weight with a win by submission. In the finals of the open weight division , my opponent pulled guard , knowing that guard was my primary game at the time , he attempted to sweep me from single leg x , we ended up out of bounds , luckily it was an advantage for him , once we restarted with double guard pull , I initiated a berimbolo and he went turtle , I was able to finish the match with a bow and arrow choke.

For me trying to find an upper belt with your body type and similar game to invest time in you , helped me tremendously. Also as cliche as it sounds don't give up , don't quit . if it doesn't challenge you , it doesn't change you!
