The Closed Guard Overhook is a powerful position in Jiu-Jitsu, offering immediate opportunities for submissions. One of the highest-percentage attacks from this spot is the Punch Choke. This could also be your cheat sheet to be one of the reputable black belters in the community.

There are three important points that you have to do before successfully throwing your finale move to your opponent. So, here is a concise breakdown of how to establish the position and execute the finish.

Establishing the Closed Guard Overhook

1. Isolate the Arm: Start with a cross grip on the opponent's sleeve. Reach under the opponent's arm with your opposite hand.
2. Secure the Wrist: Connect the back of your wrist to the front of their wrist to form a secure grip.
3. Build Tension: Pull your wrist forward to bend the opponent's wrist. Lift and then drop your hips, extending the hand that is notholding the sleeve.
4. Transition to Overhook: Circle this free hand to the inside, then pull your partner forward, bringing your knees to your chest.
5. Lock Down the Overhook: Flare your elbow, lift your head, and straighten the arm that was previously controlling the sleeve. Pinch your elbow as tight as possible over their shoulder.

Setting up the Punch Choke

1. Secure the Far Lapel: As you reach through with the overhook, immediately grab your opponent's far lapel. This is located on the opposite side of the arm you have trapped.
2. Create an Angle: Your next critical step is to get onto your side. Hip escape all the way out to establish a strong side position. Try to climb your legs high on their back.
3. Grab the Near Lapel: With your free hand (the one not controlling the overhook/sleeve), grab the*near side lapel.

The Finish

With both lapels secured and your body on its side, a flawless finished will already be guaranteed.

Lean back slightly to lock your elbow (the arm gripping the far lapel). Pull both lapel grips simultaneously while crunching your core in toward your partner for the immediate, powerful submission.
