📰 IBJJF Bans the Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi

If you follow the Jiu Jitsu competition scene, you probably saw that the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) recently announced a whole set of new rules and requirements for competition uniforms.

The most stringent of these requirements is the new "jacket weight" thresholds. The new regulations, which went into effect on June 3rd 2024, require gi jackets to weigh between 380gsm and 650gsm (grams per square meter):

Under these new rules, some lightweight gis (like our extremely popular Aeroweave which clocks in at just 275gsm) are now no longer legal for IBJJF competition.

What does this mean for you? Well, first off if you don't compete you've got nothing to worry about. If you DO compete, the Aeroweave gi is still legal in just about every other major Jiu Jitsu tournament organization. You'll be 100% fine wearing it at a tournament run by NAGA, Jiu Jitsu World League, Grappling X, or any non-IBJJF event.

Even if taking down IBJJF world titles is your goal, the Aeroweave is still an excellent gi to use in your training. It's ultra lightweight weave will keep you drier and more comfortable, resulting in more training hours on the mats even if you ultimately don't end up wearing this gi on competition day.

We were on the fence about trying to alter the material on this gi to make it compliant with the new IBJJF rules. But ultimately we decided not to, customers love this gi so much as-is that we couldn't bear bringing its weight all the way up from 275gsm to 380gsm just to make it IBJJF legal.

Want to see what I mean? Just check out these recent customer reviews on our Aeroweave Gi:

I (Cole South, one of the owners of Gold BJJ) am a Jiu Jitsu black belt and regularly compete in both IBJJF and non-IBJJF events. The Aeroweave is still one of my "daily driver" gis, even if you might not see me on an IBJJF podium wearing it anymore. It's definitely a worthy gi for your arsenal 🥋

Do you absolutely need a gi that is 100% IBJJF competition legal? We've got you covered there too. All of our other gis have been carefully crafted to meet the new IBJJF guidelines. My personal favorite is our Foundation Gi, I wore this one at the IBJJF 2024 Summer San Diego Open:
