How to Pick the Best Jiu Jitsu Gi

We offer Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) gis in a variety of models, sizes, and colors. Some factors to consider in selecting the best BJJ gi for you include:

  • Gi Weight. Lighter gis are more comfortable in warmer weather, and are easier to make weight in for many tournaments (IBJJF events require you to weigh in wearing your gi). Heavier weight gis make it harder for your opponent to establish grips. We offer everything from ultra lightweight Jiu Jitsu gis (like our Aeroweave) to heavy duty gis (like our Valiant). Gi weight is measured in "gsm," or grams per square meter. Anything under 350gsm is considered lightweight, and anything over 500gsm would be considered a heavyweight gi. When it comes to weight, the best BJJ gi for you is really a matter of personal preference!
  • Sizing. Some athletes like a snug, tight fitting gi... while others prefer a little more room to move around in. You'll notice that there is some overlap on our size charts. A 6 foot tall, 190lb man for example could go with either an A2L or an A3 (which would be a bit wider) depneding on how they like their Jiu Jitsu gis to fit. We also offer female sizing with our women's Jiu Jitsu gis, as well as youth sizing with our kids' Jiu Jitsu gis. Unlike No-Gi gear, which is sized with a traditional Small/Medium/Large system, Jiu Jitsu gis are sized with an "A" system. A0 is our smallest size, and A5 is our largest size. We also offer in between sizes like A2H (wider than an A2) and A3L (longer than an A3). How you care for your gi will also impact the sizing you should choose; if you toss your gi in the washer/dryer, you might want to size up due to shrinkage.
  • Competition Rules. Not all gis are competition legal, and every competition has different uniform requirements. For example, the IBJJF will only let you compete while wearing one of 3 colors: white, royal blue, or black. The IBJJF has some other quirky rules, for example they do not let you wear a rash guard under your gi. While most of our gis are competition legal, you'll want to double check if you plan on competing in the gi you have your eye on.
